Splinting and Orthotics
Splints and orthotics are sometimes recommended to help hold the feet or legs in an appropriate position. They may help your child stand or walk better, or stretch his or her muscles.
Splints are made by a physiotherapist, and orthotics are made by an orthotist.
If your child requires a splint, it can be made at our centre or at your home by your physiotherapist. A referral from a physician is required if your child’s splint/orthotic is going to be paid for by a health plan or other funding agency.
If your child requires an orthotic, usually the physiotherapist works together with your child’s orthotist to make the orthotic. The physiotherapist can also help you to implement the splint/orthotic into your child’s daily life.
